The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) has issued a threat to shut down power supply nationwide following an alleged assault on personnel of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) by armed police officers.
The incident reportedly occurred at the Egbu 132/33kV Transmission Substation in Imo State, where police officers are accused of invading the facility and violently disrupting operations.
In a statement released late Saturday by NUEE’s Acting General Secretary, Dominic Igwebike, the union described the event as a “brutal invasion” and condemned the actions of the officers, whom they claim were acting on behalf of the Imo State government.
According to the union, the officers vandalized control rooms, forcefully disconnected power at gunpoint, and held staff members hostage while coercing them into carrying out an “illegal outage.”
“During the invasion,” the statement read, “our members were beaten, assaulted, and their personal belongings — including phones, laptops, and vehicles — were destroyed. CCTV equipment was also vandalized before the workers were abducted to an unknown location.”
NUEE has vowed not to resume operations in Imo State until its demands are met. These demands include the immediate release of the detained staff, assurances of safety from the TCN management, the Federal Ministry of Power, and the Inspector General of Police, as well as compensation for damaged property and medical care for assaulted staff.
The union has also instructed members nationwide to stay away from their duty posts until further notice.
“Failure to address these issues promptly will leave the union with no choice but to withdraw services across the country,” the statement warned, citing concerns over the “brutality, intimidation, and threats to life” faced by electricity workers.
