Kano government calls for Ganduje’s arrest over alleged plot to create illegal militia group

The Kano State government has demanded the immediate investigation and arrest of former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje over what it alleges is an attempt to establish an illegal militia group in the state.

Ganduje recently announced plans to form a Hisbah-style volunteer corps under the Ganduje Foundation, following the dismissal of 12,000 personnel from the Kano State Hisbah Board.

Addressing journalists after the 34th State Executive Council (SEC) meeting at the Government House, Commissioner for Information and Home Affairs, Ibrahim Waiya, said the council reviewed statements attributed to Ganduje and Deputy Senate President Barau I. Jibrin. In those comments, they reportedly claimed Kano was vulnerable to banditry and proposed recruiting 12,000 youths into a new religious security outfit named Khairul Nas.

Waiya described the remarks as reckless, inflammatory, and potentially harmful to ongoing security efforts of both the Kano government and the administration of President Bola Tinubu.

He added that the council took particular note of the fact that, less than two days after the comments were made, suspected bandits infiltrated some border communities in the state — a coincidence that has raised further concern about the motives behind the statements.

“Council reaffirmed its appreciation to the Federal Government and security agencies for their continuous support in safeguarding the state and therefore calls for the former governor’s immediate investigation and arrest for attempting to create an unlawful militia,” Waiya stated.

He urged political leaders and public figures to be cautious with public comments that could heighten tensions or provoke unrest, assuring residents that the government remains committed to maintaining security and protecting lives and property.
