A Catholic nun in Croatia who claimed she was stabbed by a Muslim migrant shouting “Allahu Akbar” is now under investigation for allegedly inflicting the wounds herself and filing a false report.
Police in Zagreb say 35-year-old Sister Marija Tatjana Zrno is suspected of purchasing the weapon and stabbing herself before reporting an attack on November 28. A four-day investigation led authorities to conclude that no such assailant existed, and they are now submitting a criminal complaint to the Municipal State Attorney’s Office.
The incident initially sparked nationwide outrage, with early reports suggesting a religiously motivated assault. Sister Zrno, a member of the Sisters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul, was treated for non-life-threatening injuries at the Sisters of Charity University Hospital Centre and discharged on December 1.
She had told police she was stabbed in the abdomen by an unknown attacker in the Malešnica district and then walked back to her convent before receiving treatment. Unverified local reports at the time claimed the attacker shouted religious phrases, further inflaming public reaction.
Zagreb’s mayor, Tomislav Tomašević, urged transparency in the investigation, noting widespread public concern. The Croatian government also stated that police and medical teams acted promptly.
Investigators now assert that Sister Zrno knowingly filed a false report, aware of the legal consequences. She teaches religion at a Zagreb primary school and is recognized for her pastoral work with youth and her enthusiasm for football.
