A High Court in Edo State has granted bail to activist Harrison Gwamnishu.
Gwamnishu had been in police custody in Edo State since early December following his involvement in a ransom negotiation for a young abducted couple. The kidnappers had initially demanded ₦50 million, but Gwamnishu, contacted by the family, negotiated the amount down to ₦20 million.
According to the family, they gave the ₦20 million to Gwamnishu to pay the kidnappers. However, when the ransom was handed over, the kidnappers discovered that part of the money was missing. As a result, they released the pregnant wife but continued to detain the husband. Gwamnishu denied any wrongdoing, stating that he has a standard approach to handling such negotiations.
The family reported the incident to the police, leading to his arrest and detention.
Ossai Success Ovie, an aide to the Delta State governor, confirmed that an Edo court has now granted Gwamnishu bail.
