The Federal Government has formally classified kidnappers and violent armed groups as terrorists.
The Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, made the announcement during an end-of-year press briefing in Abuja on Monday, December 22.
According to Idris, any individual or group involved in kidnapping, attacks on farmers, or the intimidation of communities will henceforth be treated as terrorists under the law.
“The era of vague labels is over. Anyone who terrorises our people — whether acting alone or as part of a group — is a terrorist and will be designated as such. There will be no hiding under any other name,” the minister said.
He explained that the new designation would enhance intelligence sharing and improve coordination among security agencies, enabling quicker and more decisive responses.
Idris also revealed that trained and well-equipped forest guards are being deployed to rural communities. He said the guards will use surveillance, local intelligence and rapid-response strategies to secure forests and remote areas commonly used as hideouts by criminal elements.
