FG to empower 10,000 women with tricycle and motorcycle loans

The Federal Government, through the Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation (CREDICORP), has officially launched the 10,000 Women in Mobility programme, aimed at economically empowering women across Nigeria.

The initiative will provide women in all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory with access to vehicles, motorcycles, and tricycles (commonly called “Keke”), enabling them to participate in transportation, logistics, delivery services, and other mobility-related businesses. The programme is designed to enhance both financial independence and broader economic participation for women.

Speaking at the launch and handover of mobility assets on Friday, the Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, highlighted the need to create economic opportunities for women. She noted that the Abuja pilot phase had already provided vehicles to 1,000 women, with plans to scale up nationwide to benefit 10,000 women.

She explained that the programme also helps women build credible financial histories, opening doors to future credit access.

“It’s about economic empowerment. How much they drive it and the hours they invest determine the outcome. No economic effort is insignificant,” Sulaiman-Ibrahim said.
President Tinubu has set a goal for a $1 trillion economy, and we are working across sectors to activate economic spaces while including women. Since women make up over half of our population and participate in all sectors, strengthening their economic engagement benefits families and the nation.”

The Minister also commended CREDICORP Managing Director, Uzoma Nwagba, for promoting inclusive access to consumer credit and turning policy into practical economic opportunities for women.

Several stakeholders lauded the programme. Minister of State for Labour and Employment Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, Director-General of the National Automotive Design and Development Council Oluwemimo Osanipin, and National President of the National Council for Women Society Princess Edna Azura, described it as a timely intervention to enhance women’s participation in the mobility and transport sector.

Onyejeocha emphasised the social impact:
“Before now, it was unusual for women to operate commercial tricycles or vehicles. But under President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and through artisan skilling, anyone—man, woman, or girl—can become a driver today, contributing to the wider economy.”

Nwagba explained that the programme combines financing, asset provision, training, and business support to ensure beneficiaries succeed in their mobility ventures. “CREDICORP will continue collaborating with stakeholders to guarantee the programme’s success, transparency, and sustainability nationwide,” he added.

The initiative has already distributed the first 300 locally assembled tricycles and is expected to empower 10,000 women across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. Under President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, the programme aims to increase incomes, advance financial inclusion, and strengthen the country’s mobility sector.
