TIME has announced Leonardo DiCaprio as its 2025 Entertainer of the Year, celebrating a milestone season highlighted by the overwhelming success of his latest film, One Battle After Another. The movie became one of the year’s leading awards contenders on Monday after securing nine Golden Globe nominations, further cementing DiCaprio’s status as one of Hollywood’s enduring cinematic icons.
With a career spanning more than 35 years, DiCaprio has built a legacy of acclaimed performances that continue to influence contemporary filmmaking—despite what some have called “occasional cinematic missteps.” His long-awaited Oscar victory for The Revenant in 2015 remains one of the defining moments of his career.
The new film marks DiCaprio’s first collaboration with director Paul Thomas Anderson, and early reviews already hail it as one of his strongest performances. The story follows a former revolutionary turned aimless drifter—played by DiCaprio—as he embarks on a desperate mission to rescue his daughter, portrayed by Chase Infiniti, from a longtime adversary played by Sean Penn. Writing for IndieWire, critic David Ehrlich praised the role, noting that DiCaprio’s “tetchy comic genius finds new depth through his character’s natural deference.”
The recognition has also reignited discussions about DiCaprio’s most acclaimed roles. His performance in Catch Me If You Can (2002), directed by Steven Spielberg, holds a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critic Stanley Kauffmann commending his effortless charm. In Killers of the Flower Moon (2023), directed by Martin Scorsese, he delivered what reviewer Chris Bumbray described as “the most complex character he’s ever played,” contributing to the film’s 93% rating.
In The Departed (2006), DiCaprio’s intense portrayal of undercover officer Billy Costigan helped earn the film a 91% score. His environmental documentary Ice on Fire (2019) received a 90% rating, with CNN critic Brian Lowry praising it for moving beyond warnings to actionable climate insights.
One of his earliest standout roles, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (1993), remains a critical favorite, with reviewers calling his teenage performance “astonishing” and noting how he often outshone co-star Johnny Depp. In Shutter Island (2010), his portrayal of U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels is widely regarded as one of his most emotionally gripping performances, anchoring the film’s psychological intensity.
With One Battle After Another dominating the awards conversation and his designation as TIME’s Entertainer of the Year, DiCaprio’s current achievements are being hailed as both a career high point and a reaffirmation of his lasting impact on global cinema.
