Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has been shortlisted for the BBC World Sports Personality of the Year 2025 award, despite ongoing tensions between him and the club.
The 33-year-old Egyptian is among six global athletes nominated for the prestigious World Sport Star category, previously won by major figures such as Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Erling Haaland.
The BBC released the six-person shortlist and opened public voting on its official website.
Salah will compete against the following nominees:
Mariuma Caldentey (football)
Terence Crawford (boxing)
Armand Duplantis (pole vault)
Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone (sprint/hurdles)
Shohei Ohtani (baseball)
In its announcement, the BBC highlighted Salah’s remarkable achievements last season:
“The Egyptian star guided Liverpool to the Premier League title while setting multiple records, becoming the first player ever to win the Golden Boot, Playmaker of the Season, and Player of the Season awards in a single campaign.”
The nomination comes amid controversy surrounding Salah, following his recent comments alleging that Liverpool had “thrown him under the bus” and that his relationship with manager Arne Slot had deteriorated. The fallout resulted in Salah being left out of the squad for Liverpool’s Champions League match against Inter due to disciplinary reasons.
