The Italy international, who joined City in the summer, received the honour after a remarkable year in which he lifted the Champions League trophy for the first time and secured three domestic titles with his former club, Paris Saint-Germain.
City’s number one edged out strong competition from Liverpool’s Alisson Becker, Real Madrid’s Thibaut Courtois, Aston Villa’s Emiliano MartĂnez, Bayern Munich’s Manuel Neuer, Arsenal’s David Raya, Inter Milan’s Yann Sommer and Barcelona’s Wojciech SzczÄ™sny to claim the prestigious award.
Reacting to the accolade, Donnarumma said he was immensely proud to be recognised as the world’s best goalkeeper ahead of so many outstanding peers, for whom he holds great respect. He described the past year as unforgettable and said the recognition meant a great deal given his contribution to his teams’ success.
Donnarumma added that he is grateful for the honour and is now focused on achieving further success with his new club, Manchester City.
The nominees were selected by a panel of experts, with the winner decided by an international jury made up of men’s national team coaches, national team captains, football journalists and fans who voted via FIFA’s official website.
