Osimhen wins GQ Sportsman of the Year in Turkey

Super Eagles and Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen has been named GQ Turkey’s Sportsman of the Year. The 26-year-old received the honour at a black-tie ceremony in Istanbul on Wednesday.

The annual awards, organised by the Turkish edition of GQ Magazine, celebrate exceptional achievers in sports, entertainment, and other creative fields.

Since joining Galatasaray, Osimhen has become a fan favourite and a key figure in the club’s domestic success. In his debut season, he scored 37 goals and provided seven assists in 41 matches, helping the team win both the Super Lig and the Turkish Cup. His impact also led Galatasaray to break the national transfer record, paying €75 million to sign him permanently from Napoli.

Despite injury setbacks this season, Osimhen has remained prolific, scoring 11 goals in 14 appearances across all competitions.

He has also been a standout performer for Nigeria’s Super Eagles. After missing the first four World Cup qualifiers, he returned to score six goals in five matches, guiding the team into the play-offs. He added two more goals in the semi-final against Gabon, though injury limited his involvement in the final against DR Congo, where Nigeria fell short in a penalty shootout.

Osimhen is expected to lead Nigeria’s attack at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, scheduled from December 21 to January 18, 2026.

In his acceptance speech, Osimhen thanked GQ, Galatasaray, and supporters worldwide.

“This means so much to my family and me,” he said. “I will continue to give my best for my family, for Galatasaray, and for the fans everywhere.”

The ceremony also honoured several other personalities, including actor Aras Aydın as International Achiever of the Year, actress Sinem Ünsal as Woman of the Year, singer-songwriter Edis as Music Person of the Year, and Bahtiyar Büyükduman as Chef of the Year. Eleven additional awards were presented across various fields.
