PDP issues expulsion certificates to Wike, Fayose, others

The National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party has formally issued expulsion certificates to Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike and other party members removed during the PDP’s recent national convention in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The certificates were presented on Tuesday, December 2, at an NWC meeting in Abuja, where Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum officially handed over party leadership to Senator Kabiru Turaki. The development was later announced on the party’s X handle.

The expelled members, including Wike, had their removal ratified on November 16 over allegations of anti-party activities.

Speaking to journalists, Turaki said the committee reviewed all matters relating to the affected members before issuing the certificates. He explained that the documentation was necessary, noting that Nigerian law prohibits dual political party membership.

“Now that they are no longer members of our party, and since the National Convention — our highest decision-making body — has expelled them, we resolved to issue certificates of expulsion,” Turaki said.

He added that the documents would serve as official proof when the individuals seek to join other political parties. According to him, the certificates have already been sent out via courier.

Those affected include Nyesom Wike, former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, Umaru Bature, Kamarudeen Ajibade (SAN), Abdurahman Muhammad, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, Austin Nwachukwu, Abraham Amah Nnanna, George Turna and Chief Dan Orbih.

Turaki said the step was taken to eliminate any uncertainty regarding their status, adding that institutions such as INEC, the police, DSS and NSCDC would be officially notified.

He noted that the PDP would also publish public disclaimers, warning that anyone engaging politically with the expelled members “does so at their own risk.”

According to him, the move signals a new chapter for the PDP as it works to reposition itself ahead of the 2027 elections.

Meanwhile, the expulsion process remains disputed, as it was carried out despite existing court orders halting the Ibadan convention over unresolved legal battles involving parallel state congresses.

A faction aligned with Wike — led by National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu and factional Chairman Mohammed Abdulrahman — has rejected the Ibadan convention and held its own NEC meeting in Abuja on November 18, where it issued counter-expulsions targeting several top party leaders, including Governors Seyi Makinde, Bala Mohammed, Dauda Lawal, former BOT Chairman Adolphus Wabara and Turaki himself.
