Former Senator representing Enugu East, Prince Gilbert Emeka Nnaji, has resigned from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) after 27 years to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Nnaji, a founding member of the PDP, announced his resignation in a letter dated December 26, 2025, addressed to the PDP Chairman of Umuenwene Ward, Iji Nike, Enugu East Local Government Area. A copy of the letter, titled Notice of Resignation from the People’s Democratic Party, was obtained by The Advocate in Enugu on Monday.
In the letter, Nnaji stated that he could no longer remain in the party, describing it as “irredeemable and irreparable.” He wrote:
“I respectfully inform you of my decision to resign my membership of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, after 27 years. It was a difficult decision, especially considering the national development prospects and opportunities the PDP once represented for Nigeria. The party was founded on core democratic ideals of unity, patriotism, justice, fairness, transparency, selflessness, mutual respect, and resilience.
Over the years, in various capacities, I have been faithfully committed and have made significant contributions to the party. However, recent developments confirm that the PDP of the Founding Fathers has become irredeemable and irreparable. It is indeed unfortunate.”
Nnaji added that after consulting with his family, associates, and other eminent citizens, he decided to seek a new platform to continue contributing to national development. He said he found a promising opportunity in the ADC, which he described as a platform with “great and motivated like-minded compatriots” to help redirect Nigeria’s trajectory.
He concluded by expressing goodwill toward the PDP and wishing the party well.
Senator Nnaji is expected to formally declare his membership in the ADC at a ceremony in Enugu on Wednesday, joining other prominent politicians from the South East.
