President Bola Tinubu has expressed confidence that the establishment of state police will be achieved as part of measures to strengthen security across Nigeria.
He made the remarks on Thursday night while addressing All Progressives Congress (APC) governors at a party caucus meeting held at the State House in Abuja.
Tinubu revealed that he recently discussed the creation of state policing with leaders from the United States and Europe, highlighting it as a key strategy for improving internal security.
“I had a very long discussion with US and European leaders. I was telling them that we will definitely pass a state police law to improve security,” he said.
“When they asked if I was confident, I replied, ‘Yes, I have a party to rely on. We will make it happen. And if, by some chance, we fail at this level, God forbid, we will not fail.’”
The president also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to implementing the Supreme Court ruling on local government autonomy, urging governors to ensure its effective execution.
“Let us equally focus on the recent Supreme Court judgment. How can we use it to position our country and party better?” he said.
“To me, local government autonomy must be real. We must give them their funds directly—there is no autonomy without a funded mandate. This is the truth and compliance with the Supreme Court.”
Tinubu further encouraged APC governors to remain actively engaged in governance at all levels, adopting flexible approaches to address challenges in their states.
“You have to navigate this country; whether we like it or not, you hold leadership positions that require you to promote, tolerate, and be flexible while getting involved in affairs at all levels, including local governments,” he said.
He stressed that governors must take leadership responsibilities seriously, emphasizing that direct funding for local governments is essential and non-negotiable for genuine autonomy.
