Michael Carrick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer are currently the frontrunners to take over as Manchester United’s caretaker manager for the remainder of the season following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim.
According to a report by Sky Sports on Wednesday, both former United players have prior experience managing the club. Solskjaer previously spent three years as permanent manager after initially being appointed on an interim basis in 2018, while Carrick briefly led the team for three matches as caretaker in 2021.
Sky Sports also revealed that both men are expected to meet face-to-face with the club’s hierarchy, with the possibility of a joint role not ruled out. Carrick served as an important member of Solskjaer’s coaching staff during his time at Old Trafford, and their established working relationship is viewed as a potential asset during a challenging period for the club.
Former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy is also understood to be among the candidates being considered for the temporary position.
For now, Darren Fletcher will remain in charge on an interim basis. The ex-midfielder, who currently coaches United’s under-18 side, will oversee his first match on Wednesday when United face Burnley away in the Premier League. The club is expected to revisit the caretaker appointment process after that game.
