Nigerian left-back Bruno Onyemaechi has revealed what former Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro did during the last Africa Cup of Nations.
Onyemaechi said he was denied the chance to play at the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast, despite personally pleading with the Portuguese coach.
The 26-year-old, part of the Super Eagles squad that reached the final, did not play a single minute throughout the tournament.
“You know, when a coach gives you an opportunity, you have to take it. I remember the last AFCON,” Onyemaechi told reporters in Morocco.
“I was begging for the chance, but Peseiro didn’t give it to me. I’ve learned from that experience to always be ready when called. That’s what matters most, and I thank God for this moment.”
Under current head coach Eric Chelle, Onyemaechi has established himself as a key player for the Super Eagles.
