JAMB Clarifies: University Students Cannot Sit for UTME Without Disclosure

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has stated that university undergraduates are not permitted to write the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) without properly disclosing their matriculation status.

JAMB spokesman Fabian Benjamin made this clarification in Abuja on Tuesday, responding to what he described as a misleading distortion of the Board’s directives for candidates registering for the 2026 UTME/Direct Entry (DE).

According to Benjamin, some self-styled education advocates have deliberately misrepresented the rules for personal or social media gain. He noted that such misrepresentations typically emerge at the start of every registration cycle, often by individuals who do not carefully review the guidelines.

Benjamin emphasized that while it is not illegal for a student already enrolled in a tertiary institution to register for the UTME/DE, failing to disclose this status is an offence. Disclosure ensures that, once a candidate secures admission through the new registration, the previous admission automatically becomes void. Nigerian law forbids holding two admissions simultaneously.

He added that some matriculated students have been found acting as professional exam takers. Mandatory disclosure allows JAMB to take appropriate action against such cases. The Board’s system can detect prior matriculation, and candidates who fail to disclose their status risk losing both opportunities.

JAMB urged the public to exercise caution and be wary of so-called education advocates spreading false information that could mislead candidates and parents for personal gain.
