Nollywood actress Moyo Lawal shared an emotional video on Instagram just days before her birthday, revealing a deeply personal experience she had kept private for years.
In the video, Moyo explained that she had avoided interviews and public discussions, choosing instead to grieve quietly with her family and close friends. She said she decided to speak now to correct a narrative she feels has been unfairly attached to her and to encourage other women facing similar challenges.
The actress revealed that several young women had reached out to her, sharing how they felt mentally overwhelmed and burdened with shame and fear after enduring emotional manipulation and threats in their relationships. She emphasized that such shame is never the victim’s fault.
Reflecting on her own experience, Moyo said that when she tried to leave a relationship, she was blamed and accused of causing the problems because she refused to post her partner on social media. She was told that if he couldn’t have her, no one else would want her—a statement she described as profoundly damaging.
For years, Moyo coped by immersing herself in her movie characters, using them to escape her real-life pain. She said she has now decided to “flip the switch” and live fully as herself, rather than through roles or personas.
She described this new chapter as a time to embrace life openly, try new things, enjoy herself, make mistakes, and exist without fear of judgment. Having endured what she considers her darkest experiences, Moyo said she no longer wants to live cautiously or invisibly.
The actress thanked her friends and family for respecting her silence and supporting her private healing process. She concluded the video by inviting her followers to join her in this new phase of her life and to approach her journey with understanding and kindness.
