US Pauses Steep Tariffs on Certain Italian Pasta Brands, Italy Confirms

Italy announced on Thursday that the United States has eased plans to impose heavy anti-dumping duties on several Italian pasta brands.

The tariffs were initially part of an investigation into claims that some companies were “dumping” their products—selling them abroad at prices below market value.

The Trump administration had in September proposed provisional duties exceeding 91 percent on pasta starting January 1, in addition to the 15 percent already in effect.

However, months before the investigation’s conclusion on March 11, the US Commerce Department revised the planned tariffs for “certain Italian pasta brands,” setting them at levels “far below” the original proposals, according to a statement from the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Under the new arrangement, duties will be 2.3 percent for La Molisana, 14 percent for Garofalo, and 9.1 percent for 11 other pasta producers. “The adjustment of these tariff rates reflects US authorities’ recognition of our companies’ willingness to cooperate,” the ministry said.

Italy had previously indicated in October that it was collaborating with the US and the European Commission to resolve the pasta dispute.

The US is a major market for Italian pasta, generating an estimated €671 million ($788 million) in 2024, roughly 17 percent of Italy’s total pasta exports, according to the farm industry group Coldiretti.
