Iyabo Obasanjo Vows To ‘Fight’ For All Progressives Congress Ticket Ahead Of 2027 Ogun State Governorship Race

Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has declared that she will not withdraw from the 2027 Ogun State governorship contest for any aspirant.

The governorship hopeful stated that she is fully committed to the race and will utilise all legitimate political avenues to secure the ticket of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

She made the declaration on Saturday during a media interaction with journalists at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta.

Dismissing speculation that she could eventually step aside for another contender, Obasanjo stressed that her ambition is to compete and emerge victorious.

According to her, it would make no sense to embark on statewide consultations and mobilisation efforts only to decline to contest. She affirmed that she intends to challenge every aspirant in the field and will take all necessary steps within party guidelines to clinch the ticket.

Her statement comes amid increasing political manoeuvring in Ogun State ahead of the 2027 elections, with aspirants intensifying consultations within party ranks and across local government areas.

Obasanjo also argued that Ogun State has the opportunity to make history by electing Nigeria’s first female governor in 2027.

Although she refrained from mentioning specific opponents, she maintained that her ambition is driven by a desire for service and development rather than symbolism, expressing confidence in her prospects within the APC.

Responding to claims that she lacks grassroots support, the former senator dismissed the assertion as inaccurate. She recalled that during her Senate campaign, she visited even the most remote communities in Ogun Central Senatorial District, insisting that her political strength lies at the grassroots level.

Obasanjo emphasised that her political structure was built through direct engagement with local communities across the district.

Addressing concerns about her absence from frontline politics and what some describe as a “comeback,” she explained that her time abroad offered her valuable exposure to governance systems in other countries, particularly at the municipal level, including taxation and public service delivery models.

She added that having established a professional career prior to entering politics, she views public office as a platform to drive development rather than a lifelong career path, describing public service as an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to society.
