Tajudeen Baruwa has assumed control of the National Secretariat of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Abuja, effectively displacing Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo.
The development follows a series of court rulings that altered the leadership structure of the union.
Addressing journalists after taking over the secretariat on Monday, Baruwa—accompanied by supporters from across the country—stated that his actions were backed by two separate court judgments delivered in his favour.
He explained that the union had formally notified the Nigeria Police Force, attaching copies of the court rulings to aid the recovery of the secretariat. However, he noted that the response from the authorities had been less than encouraging, prompting a follow-up notice declaring the union’s intention to reclaim its office.
Baruwa emphasised that the takeover was peaceful and in compliance with court directives, insisting that the union remained law-abiding and had no intention of causing unrest.
According to him, the faction had waited nearly two years for compliance with the court orders before deciding to resume control of the secretariat.
He also disclosed that a member of his group was allegedly attacked during the process and is currently receiving medical attention, but assured that the situation is under control.
Despite the tensions, Baruwa expressed willingness for reconciliation, maintaining that no individual or group is above the law.
