The newly inaugurated Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has expressed strong support for the establishment of state police across Nigeria.
Speaking after his swearing-in at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Disu affirmed that the move toward state policing is inevitable and should be embraced.
He noted that the Nigeria Police Force is actively participating in the committee responsible for working out the implementation framework, stressing that the force does not want to be sidelined in discussions that directly affect its operations.
His remarks come shortly after President Bola Tinubu urged the Senate to fast-track legislation that would pave the way for the creation of state police.
Addressing concerns surrounding the proposal, Disu said the police are not threatened by the development.
“From the standpoint of the Nigerian Police, we don’t want it to appear as though decisions are being made without our input, especially when we are the key stakeholders,” he said.
“We are committed to ensuring that the right framework is put in place. The police must play their role in making the initiative work effectively.
“We are not afraid, and no one is taking over our responsibilities. It is simply about collaboration and partnership.”
