Cristiano Ronaldo has reportedly been sent home from Portugal’s national team camp after receiving his first-ever international red card.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner was dismissed for elbowing Dara O’Shea during Portugal’s surprising 2-0 loss to Ireland on Thursday.
A straight red card in international football usually results in a two-match suspension, which means Ronaldo could miss the opening game of what is expected to be his final World Cup.
Portugal has yet to secure qualification for next summer’s tournament, and they must beat Armenia on Sunday to guarantee their spot.
However, according to Portuguese newspaper A Bola, Ronaldo will not be staying to support his teammates in the crucial match at Estádio do Dragão, as he has been “released from the national team.”
The Portugal captain is now expected to return to Saudi Arabia, where he will rejoin Al Nassr ahead of their match against Al-Khaleej on November 23.
