Trump Reaffirms Plan to Sue BBC for Up to $5 Billion Over Edited Speech

US President Donald Trump has reiterated his intention to file a lawsuit against the BBC, seeking damages between $1 billion and $5 billion, after the broadcaster edited one of his speeches.

The dispute arose following a BBC Panorama documentary that allegedly portrayed Trump as encouraging violence ahead of the January 6 Capitol riot. Although the BBC issued an apology on Friday, acknowledging an “error of judgment” in the edit and stating that the program would not be rebroadcast in its current form, the network maintained that there was no basis for a defamation claim.

The BBC had been given until today to respond to Trump’s initial $1 billion legal ultimatum, which included demands for a retraction, a public apology, and compensation.

After the network declined to meet all of his demands, Trump told GB News that he felt compelled to pursue legal action. “I’m not looking to get into lawsuits, but I think I have an obligation to do it. This was so egregious,” he said during a heated interview with Bev Turner. “If you don’t do it, you don’t stop it from happening again with other people.”

Speaking to reporters outside the White House on Friday, Trump confirmed his plan to move forward with the lawsuit. “We’ll sue them for anywhere between $1 billion and $5 billion, probably sometime next week,” he said.
