President Bola Tinubu has urged the Super Eagles to put their painful FIFA World Cup qualifier exit behind them and immediately redirect their energy toward preparing for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, the President praised the team’s effort despite their defeat in the playoff match on Sunday, November 16.
Nigeria’s hopes of appearing at the 2026 World Cup were dashed after DR Congo knocked the Super Eagles out in a dramatic playoff clash in Morocco. The match ended 1–1 after extra time, before DR Congo triumphed 4–3 in the penalty shootout to advance to the Inter-Confederation play-off. Tinubu acknowledged the widespread disappointment, noting that this marks the second consecutive World Cup the team will miss.
He said, “Despite the unfortunate loss, we must acknowledge the players’ commitment and continue to support them. It is time to close the gaps. Our football administrators, players, and all stakeholders must return to the drawing board.”
The President ended with a firm directive: “We must now channel our efforts into the Africa Cup of Nations. The Super Eagles must reclaim their lost glory.”
