PDP Chieftain: Holding Convention Now Is Illegal

George Turnah, Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the South-South Zone, has criticised the Party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) for rejecting the reconciliation committee’s recommendations aimed at resolving the internal crisis and facilitating a peaceful national convention in 2025.

Turnah also condemned moves by a faction of the party to proceed with the convention despite a court order preventing it, calling such actions illegal.

He described the BoT’s rejection as an act of impunity.

Although preparations appear to be in full swing at the Lekan Salami Stadium, the proposed venue for the two-day convention, Turnah insisted that no legitimate PDP convention is currently taking place.

“It’s important to clarify that no PDP convention is being held anywhere. Nigerians have the freedom to assemble, and even the Governor of Oyo State is free to host any event — whether it’s for PDP members or not. He can host social gatherings, and that's fine. But we remain law-abiding citizens.”

Turnah further criticised the party leadership for going ahead despite a court judgment stopping the convention.

“This is a clear example of the impunity we’ve been talking about. There is already a court judgment restraining the convention. INEC has also not cleared the event and asked for due processes to be completed first. Yet, they went ahead to secure an ex parte order through forum shopping.”

He added that the court ruled on the exclusion of a founding member, Sule Lamido, and transparency is lacking in the lead-up to the convention.

“In past conventions, aspirants are known, and nomination processes are open and public. The media is involved, and campaigns happen across the country. None of those are happening now,” Turnah said.
