A man suspected to be dealing with mental health challenges has killed a soldier in the Imota area of Ikorodu, Lagos State.
The tragic incident occurred in broad daylight on Sunday, Nov. 16, sending residents running for safety.
A viral video shared on social media captured the soldier lying lifeless in a pool of blood, while the attacker — dressed in torn clothing — was also seen motionless on the ground. Voices in the background of the footage claimed the attacker had shot the soldier with the fallen officer’s rifle.
However, the Nigerian Army has corrected that narrative.
In a statement issued by the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations for the 81 Division, Lt. Col. Musa Yahaya, the military clarified that the soldier, who had been deployed for internal security operations in Imota, was hit on the head with a heavy wooden log by the mentally unstable man.
According to the statement, the soldiers were trying to calm a tense situation when the attacker suddenly struck from behind.
The Army’s statement read in part:
“Without prejudice to the ongoing investigation, it is necessary to provide preliminary information on the circumstances surrounding the incident. On November 16, 2025, at about 4 p.m., a soldier deployed for internal security duty in the Imota area of Ikorodu, while attempting to de-escalate a chaotic situation, was attacked by a mentally unstable individual. The attacker struck the soldier on the head with a heavy log, inflicting severe injury.
“The situation was brought under control by other soldiers at the scene, who neutralised the attacker and recovered the soldier’s body.”
