The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, has urged Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to stop politicizing matters of security and instead concentrate on addressing the challenges confronting the state.
His response followed allegations made after the state’s 34th Executive Council Meeting, where the government claimed that one of his comments could undermine ongoing security operations. Senator Barau dismissed the claims as baseless, insisting that tackling insecurity—whether in Kano or anywhere else in the country—requires collective effort.
In a statement issued through his media aide, Ismail Mudashir, Barau rejected the government’s assertions and demanded proof.
“The attention of the media office of the Deputy President of the Senate has been drawn to false, irresponsible, and malicious allegations by the Kano State Government… claiming the senator made comments capable of jeopardizing security efforts,” the statement said.
He accused the state government of fabricating lies to tarnish his growing reputation, stressing that he had never made any remark that could disrupt security operations.
Barau reiterated his longstanding collaboration with stakeholders to combat insecurity, and again challenged the government to provide any evidence of wrongdoing: “We challenge them to present the clip where the Deputy President of the Senate allegedly made such statements.”
As the First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, he also criticised what he described as a decline in governance under Governor Yusuf.
“Before governance was relegated, Kano was nearly on par with Lagos in terms of prosperity. Sadly, misgovernance has reversed these gains,” he stated.
The senator argued that Kano could reclaim its former status if proper decisions were made, saying the state possesses all it needs to return to its “glorious days.”
He highlighted several security interventions he has facilitated, including the provision of vehicles and motorcycles for police formations, renovation of parts of the state police headquarters, and the construction of police stations. He also provided support to the Department of State Services (DSS).
Barau noted additional contributions such as facilitating the establishment of training institutions for the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Gwarzo, the Police Service Commission in Kabo, and the Nigeria Immigration Service in Bichi, as well as installing solar streetlights to aid night patrols.
The statement concluded by emphasizing that Senator Barau has made “significant contributions” to enhancing security in Kano and urged the state government to focus on effective governance rather than launching personal attacks.
