Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup have received a boost following reports that the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) is under investigation for allegedly fielding ineligible players.
According to Arise News, the probe centres on claims that nine players changed national allegiance without fully completing the required legal and administrative procedures.
It is alleged that the players failed to formally renounce their previous citizenships, a crucial requirement since DR Congo does not permit dual nationality.
If the allegations are upheld, DR Congo could face severe sanctions, including possible expulsion from the competition.
Last month, the Leopards defeated the Super Eagles on penalties to clinch Africa’s spot in the Intercontinental Playoffs for a place at the 2026 World Cup.
However, with FIFA now reportedly reviewing the matter, DR Congo may face disciplinary action ahead of the playoffs scheduled for March 2026.
