A former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad (retd.), has died at the age of 71.
The death was confirmed on Tuesday by Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, in a condolence message issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mukhtar Gidado.
According to the statement, the former CJN passed away on Tuesday at a hospital in Saudi Arabia after a long illness.
Governor Mohammed described his death as a major loss to Bauchi State, the Nigerian judiciary, and the country as a whole.
He said Justice Muhammad was a notable son of Bauchi State whose life and career were defined by dedication, integrity, and a firm commitment to the rule of law.
The governor noted that the late jurist rose through the judicial ranks with distinction, serving as a High Court Judge, Justice of the Court of Appeal, Justice of the Supreme Court, and eventually as Chief Justice of Nigeria between 2019 and 2022.
“Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad embodied the ideals of a patriotic Nigerian who devoted his life to the service of justice and the progress of our nation. His death is a great loss, not only to Bauchi State but also to the Nigerian judiciary and the rule of law,” the statement said.
