Ahead 2027. Labour Party rules out automatic ticket for Peter Obi

The Labour Party has stated that its former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, will still need to participate in the party primaries if he intends to run under its banner in the 2027 general elections.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, revealed this in an interview with Punch. His comments come amid growing uncertainty about Obi’s political plans and ongoing tensions between the former Anambra State governor and the Julius Abure–led party leadership.

Ifoh noted that while the party remains open to reconciling with Obi and other dissatisfied members, it will not compromise its internal democratic procedures.

He said, “We have addressed this repeatedly. The Labour Party has always maintained that tickets will be decided at the party’s convention. The NEC has already made its position clear regarding our presidential candidate.

“Every aspirant must emerge through a properly conducted convention. No one—whether seeking the presidential, governorship, or chairmanship ticket—will receive an automatic slot.”

He added that Obi has distanced himself from the current party leadership for nearly a year.

“We’ve said it before: only Obi can clarify his position in the Labour Party. No one can speak for him. Whether he is with the ADC or still with Labour, he alone can answer that.”
