Former First Lady Aisha Buhari has revealed that her late husband, President Muhammadu Buhari, once believed rumours within Aso Rock suggesting she planned to kill him, a situation that reportedly led him to start locking his room.
According to Aisha Buhari, the health challenges that forced the President to embark on 154 days of medical leave in 2017 were triggered by disruptions to his carefully managed feeding routine and poor nutritional management.
Her account is contained in a new biography titled “From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari” by Dr. Charles Omole, launched at the State House on Monday, December 15. The book traces Buhari’s life from his childhood in Daura, Katsina State, to his final moments in a London hospital in mid-July 2025.
The former First Lady explained that she had long overseen Buhari’s diet, supplements, and meal schedules, a routine she said helped sustain “a slender man with a long history of malnutrition symptoms.” She emphasized that elderly bodies require steady and gentle care, insisting that Buhari had no chronic illness as long as his routine was maintained.
The book notes that Buhari’s 2017 health crisis did not stem from a mysterious disease or conspiracy but from the breakdown of this long-established nutritional regimen after the family moved into Aso Villa.
Aisha Buhari reportedly convened a meeting with senior aides, including the President’s physician, the Chief Security Officer, the housekeeper, and the Director-General of the SSS, to outline the feeding plan, which involved scheduled meals, vitamin supplements, oils, proteins, and cereals.
However, the routine eventually collapsed due to rumours and fear-mongering. According to the book, Aisha Buhari said gossip claiming she wanted to kill her husband caused Buhari to distrust her temporarily. During that period, he began locking his room, altered his habits, and meals were delayed or skipped altogether, with supplements discontinued.
She further disclosed that for nearly a year, Buhari did not eat lunch and that his meals were poorly managed. This decline ultimately led to his prolonged medical treatment in the United Kingdom in 2017, during which Vice President Yemi Osinbajo assumed presidential duties.
After returning, Buhari reportedly admitted that he had never been so ill and confirmed that he received blood transfusions during his treatment.
