Tinubu will be unable to secure a second term in 2027, citing the widespread hardship Nigerians are currently experiencing.
Speaking on Politics Today on Channels Television on Monday, December 15, the senator representing Abia South dismissed the notion that Tinubu is electorally invincible. He argued that the level of economic suffering across the country has deepened public awareness and strengthened citizens’ determination to vote for change.
Abaribe stated that no politician is immune to electoral defeat and expressed confidence that Tinubu would lose in 2027, saying the mood of Nigerians clearly points in that direction.
He further questioned the credibility of the 2023 election outcome, insisting that Tinubu did not truly win but was nonetheless declared the victor. According to him, although the opposition accepted the declaration at the time in the interest of stability, it would be far more prepared in the next election.
Abaribe added that future elections would not be decided by late-night announcements, stressing that Nigerians, the opposition, and the electorate at large are now more vigilant and ready to defend their votes.
The senator also criticised the current administration over economic hardship and insecurity, questioning where the president would source enough support to win another term.
Addressing the recent defections of opposition politicians to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Abaribe firmly ruled out joining the party, stating that he would only consider such a move if no political party—including the APC—remained in Nigeria.
He argued that the wave of defections would weaken rather than strengthen the APC, as it would import internal disputes and leadership crises into the party—developments he believes would ultimately favour the opposition.
Describing the APC as structurally fragile, Abaribe said the opposition plans to capitalise on its weaknesses during the election period. He also reaffirmed his loyalty to the opposition coalition that has adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its platform for the 2027 elections, rejecting claims that the move was solely intended to advance Atiku Abubakar’s ambitions.
According to him, the coalition has not yet released its internal guidelines but remains united in its objective of unseating the APC in the next general election.
