The driver of the vehicle involved in the fatal Lagos–Ibadan Expressway crash that claimed the lives of two associates of British-Nigerian boxing star Anthony Joshua has been discharged from hospital and may be prosecuted for reckless driving.
This was confirmed during a visit to Duchess International Hospital in Lagos, where Joshua is currently receiving treatment for injuries sustained in the accident.
According to reports, the driver has since given a statement to authorities and could face charges following investigations by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) at the Sagamu interchange, where the damaged truck involved in the crash is being held.
“Anthony Joshua’s driver has been discharged from the hospital and is presently giving his statement,” spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed.
An FRSC official also disclosed that the truck driver reportedly fled the scene immediately after the collision and has now been declared wanted.
Earlier, the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) said preliminary findings indicated that a burst tyre caused the crash. According to the agency, the front passenger-side tyre of the SUV Joshua was travelling in burst, leading to loss of control before the vehicle crashed into a stationary truck.
TRACE spokesperson Babatunde Akinbiyi further stated that excessive speed was a major factor in the accident. He explained that overspeeding led to the tyre burst, causing the vehicle to veer off and ram into the parked truck.
Joshua, 36, was rushed to Duchess International Hospital and is said to be in stable condition. However, two members of his team, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele, died at the scene, a development confirmed by Matchroom Boxing.
“With profound sadness it has been confirmed that two close friends and team members, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele, have tragically passed away,” the promoters said in a statement.
Matchroom chairman Eddie Hearn also paid tribute, saying, “With the heaviest of hearts. Two great men. Rest in eternal peace, Sina and Latz. My thoughts and deepest prayers are with everyone.”
