The administration of former U.S. President Donald Trump has announced visa restrictions targeting Nigerians accused of financing or supporting acts of genocide against Christians in the country.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio made the announcement on his official X account on Wednesday.
According to Rubio, the visa policy applies not only to Nigeria but also to other governments or individuals implicated in the alleged persecution of Nigerian Christians.
He stated:
“The United States is taking decisive action in response to the atrocities and violence against Christians in Nigeria and around the world. The @StateDept will restrict U.S. visas for those who knowingly direct, authorize, fund, support, or carry out violations of religious freedom. This visa policy applies to Nigeria and other governments or individuals that persecute people for their religious beliefs.”
The Nigerian government, however, has rejected claims of genocide against Christians, asserting that the nation’s security challenges affect people of all religions.
