Senate Confirms Ex-CDS Christopher Musa as Defence Minister After Five-Hour Screening

The Senate on Wednesday confirmed retired Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, as Nigeria’s new Minister of Defence following an intensive five-hour screening session.

During the hearing, Musa faced rigorous questioning over recent security failures, including the withdrawal of troops from Government Comprehensive Girls Secondary School, Maga, in Kebbi State, shortly before the abduction of schoolgirls on November 17—a move that had sparked national outrage.

Musa assured lawmakers that he would launch a full-scale investigation into the troop withdrawal upon assuming office. He also pledged to investigate the recent killing of Brigadier General Musa Uba in Borno State and other attacks targeting military personnel.

“It is very unfortunate and deeply painful. I assure Nigerians that we will not allow terrorists to continue operating with impunity. We will pursue them fully, working with all security agencies and relevant government ministries to investigate and respond decisively,” Musa stated.

The nominee highlighted structural gaps within the armed forces and called for increased funding, stronger community engagement, and better-coordinated inter-agency operations. He stressed the importance of protecting schools through the Safe Schools Initiative and maintaining a zero-tolerance policy on terrorism and banditry.

The screening session saw moments of tension when Senator Sani Musa (APC, Niger East) proposed that Musa be allowed to “take a bow and go,” a suggestion met with protests from other lawmakers, including Senator Garba Maidoki (PDP, Kebbi South). Senate President Godswill Akpabio intervened, insisting on a thorough vetting, noting that both Nigerians and the international community were closely watching the process.

Nominated on Tuesday by President Bola Tinubu following the resignation of former Defence Minister Badaru Mohammed on health grounds, Musa pledged to prioritise the protection of lives and national territory.

“I pledge to do my best to ensure that Nigeria is safe and secure. This requires teamwork from all Nigerians because the enemies we face are ruthless and have no respect for human life. Without collective effort, they will continue their evil acts,” Musa said.

His confirmation comes amid heightened concerns over kidnappings, insurgency, and mass abductions across the country.
