Four traffic officers arrested over killing of Nigerian man in South Africa

Four traffic police officers have been arrested in connection with the killing of a 37-year-old Nigerian national in South Africa.

The victim, identified as Osinakachukwu Marcus Onu, who was legally residing in the country, was reportedly shot dead on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, along the N12 highway in Klerksdorp.

The suspects, aged between 25 and 36, are officers of the Road Traffic Management (RTM) unit. According to reports, the officers were allegedly pursuing the deceased during an operation when the incident occurred.

During the chase, Onu was reportedly shot. His vehicle and body were later discovered in the middle of the road on the opposite side of the N12.

Police responded promptly after being alerted, but found that the traffic officers involved had already left the scene. Subsequent investigations led detectives to a location in Klerksdorp, where the suspects were traced and their service firearms seized for ballistic examination.

The officers are expected to appear before the Klerksdorp Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, December 18, facing charges of murder and defeating the ends of justice.

The North West Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General (Dr) Naidoo, praised the Klerksdorp detectives for their swift action and also thanked members of the public who provided information that led to the arrests.
