Fubara recalls 1,000 teachers following pressure from Rivers State Assembly

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has ordered the immediate recall and revalidation of 1,000 teachers hired in 2023, following mounting pressure from the Rivers State House of Assembly led by Martins Amaewhule over the worsening state of public schools.

During its plenary two weeks ago, the Assembly sharply criticised the condition of primary and secondary schools across the state. Although Fubara initially pushed back on Monday—arguing that the decay long predated his administration—he reversed his position the next day.

The governor’s directive was announced in a statement signed by Sam Ogeh, Chairman of the Rivers State Universal Basic Education Board (RSUBEB).

The notice stated that, in line with Fubara’s commitment to address the staffing shortfall in public schools, the 1,000 teachers recruited in 2023 would now undergo revalidation.

Affected teachers are required to report to RSUBEB with their original appointment and posting letters to complete the process.

The recall marks a significant step in the administration’s effort to confront both manpower shortages and infrastructure challenges in the state’s education sector, following the Assembly’s pointed criticism.
