Fatima Buhari, daughter of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, has alleged that her father’s signature was forged on official documents during his time in office.
The claim is contained in From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari, a biography written by Charles Omole. In the book, Fatima, who is a forensic auditor, said she examined several documents and personally showed her father examples of signatures that were not his.
According to the account, others had also raised concerns at the time about the president’s signature being falsified. Fatima noted that the issue was not unique to Buhari’s administration, adding that similar problems had occurred under previous governments.
The author further quoted her as saying that there were instances where her father’s speeches and official directives were altered after he had already given approval.
One passage in the book recounts an incident during a trip to the United States, where Buhari was to speak at a small conference. Fatima noticed him hesitating while reading and later pointed it out. Buhari reportedly told her that the text he was reading was not the speech he had approved, explaining that it had been changed. On that occasion, he set the script aside and spoke extemporaneously.
The book describes this as part of a broader pattern in which directives were diluted, statements reworded, and intentions subtly changed as documents moved through bureaucratic channels—sometimes due to administrative lapses, and at other times, the actions of a small group.
The biography also reveals that Buhari believed his office and residence in the State House were under surveillance. As a result, he sometimes avoided speaking openly and instead communicated silently with his daughter, using gestures or written notes.
According to the author, some security chiefs who served under Buhari later confirmed that unusual objects were occasionally discovered in the president’s office and bedroom during routine security checks.
