Ed Sheeran has opened up about his fitness transformation and how becoming a father motivated him to adopt a healthier lifestyle.
The award-winning singer admitted that between the ages of 20 and 30, he lived an unhealthy life, describing himself as a “pizza-eating, beer-guzzling smoker” at heart.
However, things changed after a wake-up call shortly after the birth of his first daughter. Sheeran recalled that when his eldest child, Lyra, was just two weeks old, he had been drinking wine with a close friend before going to bed. Moments later, his daughter woke him up, leaving him feeling unwell.
“I became a dad, and it all hit me at once,” he explained. “I thought, I probably shouldn’t drink if I’m going to feel this awful. I wanted to be able to handle the night duties and be a responsible parent.”
The 34-year-old said his desire to be a better father, feel good physically, and perform at his best professionally all came together. He added that he wanted to stay fit enough to carry his child comfortably and feel strong and energetic on stage.
Speaking to Men’s Health UK, Sheeran said that while his love for comfort food and drinks hasn’t disappeared, parenthood has forced him to make better choices.
“At heart, I’m still that pizza-eating, beer-loving guy, but that’s just not realistic anymore as a parent in my thirties,” he said.
He also revealed that he began running during the COVID-19 lockdown, completing his first 10-kilometre race despite never having run more than a kilometre before. According to him, the gradual changes made a noticeable difference in how he feels.
Sheeran added that while he still enjoys red wine and good food, moderation has become key, stressing that indulgence is no longer an everyday habit.
