Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has said his decision to defect from the crisis-hit Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) was to reciprocate President Bola Tinubu’s efforts in restoring stability to the state.
Fubara explained that aligning Rivers State with the Federal Government was essential, noting that the move was aimed at deepening cooperation with the centre.
He spoke during a reception organised by the APC at the Government House in Port Harcourt, where he formally completed his membership registration and was presented with his party card. The delegation was led by the Rivers APC Chairman, Chief Tony Okocha, and included the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo.
After receiving his card, the governor said the defection was his way of returning a favour, adding that he was committed to making President Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027 seamless in the state.
“Now that we are all in the same party — having supported from different platforms before — we are now on one platform. The task is easier to deliver on the promises we have made to the President,” he said.
Fubara further pledged to strengthen the APC in Rivers State, assuring party leaders of his full backing and commitment to sustaining the party’s structure.
He stated, “I want to assure you that we will do everything possible to keep the APC as the leading progressive party in Rivers State. From this moment, the needs of the party and its executives become my responsibility.”
The governor added that the state must gear up to deliver massive support for the President, stressing that the task ahead includes promoting the President’s agenda, addressing political opposition, and securing a decisive victory in Rivers State.
