Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has described his move from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a straightforward and effortless decision.
Speaking to journalists on Thursday at the APC national headquarters in Abuja, Fubara said his time in the PDP felt distant, noting that he merely observed party activities “from the balcony.”
According to the governor, he has always identified as a progressive and is committed to strengthening unity within the APC to promote development in Rivers State and across Nigeria.
“When you say I am a new member of the progressive family, that is true. However, I have always been progressive at heart,” he said. “Now, we have a clear direction. Previously, there was no leader or governor truly heading the party. With my membership, I will work to unite everyone for the growth and progress of the party in the state. There is no cause for concern—we now have direction.”
Fubara added that his defection was one of the simplest decisions he has ever made, describing it as an act of gratitude. “Saying thank you is easy, and showing appreciation comes naturally. My decision to join the APC is my way of expressing gratitude to Mr President and collaborating with fellow progressives to develop Rivers State and Nigeria. It was not a difficult choice at all.”
Reflecting on his time in the PDP, the governor questioned his level of involvement, stating that he was only a nominal member. He claimed that most of the challenges he faced during the political crisis were caused by the party itself.
“To be honest, was I truly a PDP member? I wasn’t,” he said. “About 90 percent of what I went through during the crisis was imposed by the party. I wasn’t aligned with any faction. I wasn’t inside the house—I was simply on the balcony.”
