A woman who was reported missing at the age of three has been found alive more than 42 years later — without knowing she had ever been taken.
Michelle Marie Newton, now 46, was allegedly abducted by her mother from Kentucky, United States, in April 1983. She grew up under a different identity, unaware that she had been listed in the national missing persons database or that her mother was once on the FBI’s list of the most-wanted parental kidnapping suspects.
In November 2025, Michelle was informed of her true identity and later reunited with her father for the first time in over four decades.
According to investigators, Michelle’s mother, Debra Newton, had left home with her daughter under the pretense of relocating early to Georgia as part of the family’s plans. When Michelle’s father, Joseph Newton, later arrived in Georgia, both mother and child had vanished.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said there was one final phone call between 1984 and 1985, after which all contact ceased. A widespread search followed, with flyers distributed across parts of Georgia.
Debra was subsequently indicted for custodial interference and placed on the FBI’s list of top parental-kidnapping fugitives. The case was dropped in 2000 after authorities lost contact with Joseph, and Michelle’s name was removed from the missing children database five years later.
The investigation was revived in 2016 following a request from a family member, and a grand jury re-indicted Debra in 2017. A breakthrough came when police received a Crime Stoppers tip that Debra was living in Florida under a different name.
Officers compared recent photographs with images from 1983 and confirmed a resemblance. The lead took investigators to The Villages, Florida, where Debra had been living in a retirement community as “Sharon Nealy.” She was arrested on November 24, 2025.
After her arrest, officers visited Michelle to reveal the truth about her identity.
“They told me, ‘You’re not who you think you are. You’re a missing person. You’re Michelle Marie Newton,’” she later recounted.
Shocked by the revelation, Michelle contacted Kentucky authorities, explaining that she had never known she was a victim. Arrangements were then made for her to reunite with her father, who had searched for her for more than 40 years.
Speaking after their reunion, Joseph said, “She’s always been in our hearts. I can’t describe the feeling of finally holding my daughter again. It was just like the day she was born — like an angel.”
Michelle and her father were present as Debra was arraigned on a felony charge of custodial interference. She was later released on bond posted by a family member.
