Championship club Leicester City has apologised to staff after announcing that salaries would not be paid until after Christmas, reversing a practice the club has traditionally followed in recent years.
According to Daily Mail Sport, an email to all staff stated that payments would be made on December 31. Normally, salaries are paid on the last day of the month, but in previous years Leicester had issued December paychecks early so staff could access their funds before the festive period.
The policy affects all employees, including players and management.
The club stressed that the decision is not related to its financial position, which it says remains stable. However, reports suggest there is considerable dissatisfaction among staff over the short notice given.
The email, reportedly sent by interim managing director Kamonthip Netthanomsak on Thursday, acknowledged the disruption. In prior years, staff typically received payments on the last Friday or final working day before Christmas.
It read: “I recognise that the earlier payment has become a valued tradition for many colleagues, and it is regrettable that I have been unable to relay this with greater notice to allow more time for your personal financial planning over the festive period. Please accept my personal apologies for any inconvenience this may cause you.”
