Macclesfield footballer Ethan McLeod dies aged 21 after car accident

Macclesfield FC forward Ethan McLeod has passed away at the age of 21 following a road traffic accident on the M1.

McLeod, a product of the Wolverhampton Wanderers academy, was returning from Bedford Town after Macclesfield’s 2–1 victory on Tuesday night when the incident occurred at around 10:40pm near junction 15, close to Northampton.

Emergency services confirmed that his vehicle was involved in a collision, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident led to the closure of the M1 overnight, with the road reopening at about 7:30am the following morning. Police have appealed to members of the public for dashcam footage or any information that could assist their investigation.

Macclesfield FC paid tribute to the young footballer in an emotional statement released on Wednesday, describing McLeod as a gifted and highly respected member of the first-team squad with a bright future ahead. The club highlighted his positive character, professionalism, strong work ethic, and infectious personality, saying he inspired teammates both on and off the pitch.

The club added that his sudden passing has left everyone associated with Macclesfield in deep shock and sorrow, noting that while the loss is devastating, McLeod’s legacy and impact will never be forgotten. The statement extended heartfelt condolences to his family and friends, pledging full support during the difficult period.

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand also shared a tribute on social media, sending his condolences to McLeod’s family and loved ones.

McLeod spent a decade at Wolves’ academy and also featured for Alvechurch FC, Rushall Olympic, and Stourbridge before joining National League North side Macclesfield in July.
