Mali and Burkina Faso, both governed by military juntas and members of a regional confederation including Niger, have announced restrictions on American travelers in response to the United States’ recent travel ban.
According to separate statements from their foreign ministries obtained by AFP, both countries are imposing “equivalent measures” on US citizens after President Donald Trump expanded the US travel ban to nearly 40 countries, citing security concerns. The ban affected citizens from Syria, the Palestinian Authority, and several African nations, including Niger, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, and Senegal.
Burkina Faso said it is applying “equivalent visa measures,” while Mali announced it will enforce “the same conditions and requirements on American nationals that the US has imposed on Malian citizens.” Both governments expressed regret that the decision was made without prior consultation.
Niger has yet to announce formal counter-measures, though sources indicate plans may be underway.
