A yet-to-be-identified man was on Tuesday reportedly detained by a group of youths in Gboko, Benue State, over allegations that he was involved in a same-sex relationship.
A video circulating on social media claims the man travelled from Lagos to Gboko to meet someone he had been communicating with online.
The incident has stirred debate within the community, with some residents cautioning the youths against mob action and public humiliation.
Activist Zege Orkwande, who shared the video, urged the youths to hand the man over to the police.
“So this Benue man was apprehended in Gboko by angry youths on suspicion of being involved in same-sex activity. The video suggests he travelled from Lagos to meet another man he had been chatting with. When I talk about the rate of such cases in Benue, people take it personally. Recently, a video involving a man known as Natasha was trending online. You see some dressing like women, and it’s dismissed as content creation, but things are happening. Parents should pay attention to their sons. Gboko boys should do the right thing and hand him over to the police,” he wrote.
