Super Eagles shot-stopper Maduka Okoye has opened up about the struggles he faced during his early days at Watford, calling the period one of the most demanding of his career. The Nigerian international, who has since revived his form at Udinese in Serie A, shared these reflections in a chat with Footy-Africa.
Okoye arrived at Watford while still recovering from shoulder surgery, a circumstance that only deepened the challenges he encountered.
“My time at Watford was difficult. A lot was going on both on and off the pitch. I was young and dealing with several issues at once, including coming back from shoulder surgery. It wasn’t easy,” he said.
He acknowledged that the experience taught him significant lessons:
“Maybe I didn’t handle some situations as well as I should have, but I learned from them, and I’ve grown.”
Okoye never featured in a league match for Watford and was eventually sent on loan to Sparta Rotterdam. His move to Italy, however, became a turning point.
“I got another opportunity at Udinese, and I grabbed it. I’ve become a better player and a better person,” he added.
His strong, consistent performances have now earned him the No. 1 spot at Udinese—proof of his maturity and steady rise.
