Allegations by a member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Abdulsammad Dasuki, that the newly approved tax laws were altered have triggered widespread reactions among Nigerians.
In a video that has gone viral on X, Dasuki claimed there are clear differences between the tax laws passed by the National Assembly and the versions later gazetted and released to the public. He insisted that the changes go beyond clerical mistakes and amount to a violation of the Nigerian Constitution.
Addressing the House, Dasuki stated that what lawmakers approved was not what was eventually published, describing the situation as a serious constitutional breach that should not be ignored.
In response, the Speaker of the House, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, assured members that the matter would be thoroughly examined by the legislature.
The allegations have since sparked strong reactions from Nigerians, with several commentators describing the development as grave and potentially impeachable if confirmed.
On X, a user identified as OurFaveOnlineDoc accused the presidency of undermining the National Assembly, describing the situation as a new low for the country.
Human rights lawyer and activist, Inibehe Effiong, also weighed in, stating that if the claims are verified, they would constitute an impeachable offense.
Another commentator, Obiasogu David, described the alleged action as a constitutional fraud should it prove to be true.
As of the time of reporting, the presidency has not issued an official response to the allegations.
It will be recalled that the new tax law, signed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in June, is scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2025.
