The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on Nigerians to outrightly reject any tax legislation it described as “distorted or falsified,” stressing the need for fairness, transparency and inclusiveness in fiscal policymaking.
The labour union warned that laws affecting workers and citizens must be carefully developed to avoid grave errors or political manipulation that could negatively impact the majority of the population.
In a statement titled “Our hope lies in collective action,” NLC President Joe Ajaero emphasised the importance of unity among workers in safeguarding their wages, pensions, rights and dignity.
Ajaero advocated social and tax justice, insisting that all Nigerians deserve access to quality healthcare, education and security, while labour must be fairly rewarded and workers’ rights protected.
According to the statement, it is preferable to patiently develop laws that are jointly created and widely accepted rather than rushing policies riddled with errors and political interests. The NLC called for a society anchored on dignity, equity for workers, and a secure environment where lives and property are protected.
The labour leader further noted that workers’ greatest strength lies in unity and collective action. He urged Nigerians to resist policies that impose hardship and exploit citizens, warning against divisions along ethnic, religious or regional lines. He also encouraged grassroots mobilisation to build a stronger and more organised movement capable of influencing the country’s direction.
Reflecting on the Christmas season, the NLC extended warm greetings to Nigerian workers and citizens, acknowledging the severe economic challenges many face due to hardship-inducing policies.
Despite the difficulties, the congress said the season’s message of hope remains relevant, reminding Nigerians that light can emerge even in the darkest times. It stressed that national renewal would not come from passive hope, but from the collective power of workers and citizens united in purpose.
The NLC concluded by urging Nigerians to stand together as one people, determined to build an egalitarian nation that serves the majority rather than a privileged few.
