Obi Still Bitter Over 2023 Election – Tinubu’s Spokesman

Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, says that three years after the 2023 presidential election, former Labour Party candidate Peter Obi remains bitter.

Onanuga made the remarks in a statement on Wednesday, responding to Obi’s recent defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

He criticized Obi for continuing to claim he was denied victory, noting that analyses of the election showed he had little chance of winning and was fortunate to finish third, largely due to strong support in his South East stronghold.

The presidential aide also dismissed Obi’s defection speech, describing it as posturing. Onanuga highlighted Obi’s record as governor of Anambra State, saying no leader can advance a nation by simply imitating models from other countries and that Nigeria needs original thinkers, not “copycats.”

“Three years after the 2023 election, Obi — a politician who has moved from APGA to PDP, then Labour, and now ADC — still shows bitterness over his third-place finish. His recent speech reflected this resentment,” Onanuga said.

“He repeatedly referenced books, professors, and foreign nations to suggest that Nigeria should be entrusted to him because he has supposedly mastered the secrets of national development. But his argument is flawed: what works in Indonesia or the USA may not succeed in Nigeria.

“This is exactly what President Bola Tinubu has been implementing since May 29, 2023 — a fact Obi, consumed by bitterness, refuses to acknowledge.”
